yeah but now we've got a lot more crap music and a lot less good music, and record companies choose what it sounds like, then let the radio stations pick through whats left, and in the end you've got all the good music filtered out and all the people that use non-musical appeal to get their fame are what gets played on radio, given awards etc

what you said about modern pop stars is fairly true. a lot of musicianship has been lost to the likes of the jessica simpsons and american idol winners of the world - who i'm pretty certain don't even write their own songs. most of the good music nowadays takes a good deal of effort to find. (although you have some exceptions like the RHCP. i'd argue that john frusciante is one of the greatest guitarists of our day.)

That's a really good point, but I feel like jimi and janis were the pop stars back in the day, and they deserved to be. Now people unabashedly lipsync and use autotune in concerts and they are hailed as stars. As a musician, that's insane to me. But I can definitely see your being right as well; nostalgia and the filter of time surely has had a hand in weeding out the garbage that must have existed back then as well.

there was a lot of shitty music made back in the 60s - just how there is a lot of shitty music around nowadays. of course none of the shitty music from back then is remembered (because radio stations and such won't be inclined to play bad music). in retrospect all we see are hendrix, the who, the beatles, etc. this makes it seem that the quality has declined when in fact it has remained fairly constant.

you listen to music now, and pick from what you are given. Then, on a whim, you revisit things like this. What the fuck happened to music? I'm proud to at least have access to minds like jimi's, even though I never got to hear him before he was long gone. |
