I understand where you're coming from. That's why when I learn the notes, I don't just commit them to muscle memory (although that happens after a while). I often analyze whatever I'm playing, and commit to memory things like "that's a B-minor scale; over here it goes to F#-minor; now it goes into a looping pattern" and stuff like that. So I'm effectively using both muscle and mental memory at the same time. I re-visit my score often too, even after I've memorized it :)

hey good advice. its been sometime now, and I had done almost the same as what you said=D but I have a problem.. After memorizing a piece for sometime and relying completely on muscle memory, I will totally blank out if im interrupted halfway. And although playing it constantly, muscle memory tends to fail when I do not use score for a long time. I'm not a performer though.. I just love playingXD

Hi there! Ok I'm not Hugo...but I just recently played this piece for a concert. Yes the notes drove me crazy when I was learning them XD. I learnt the scales in the right hand first, very slowly and firmly, and made sure I could memorize them before I started adding emphasis on the melodic notes. Then I learnt the left hand alone, separating the two voices (the bass and the rest of it), again very slowly and firmly. Then I slowly combined both hands and worked up the speed. Voicing came last.

ok. do you like memorize the notes on separate hands to familiarized with it first then combine it? and my score doesn't have fingerings.

I guess you should practice it hands separately first. make sure your wrists are both flexible.
